Have Your Own Life

Have Your Own Life

We're told men want to feel needed. That they want to be the hero, the provider, the one who rescues you. And sure, some men want that. But the research on what creates lasting attraction tells a different story.

Remember that study on mate preferences? The one where compatibility ranked highest for long-term? Well, here's another finding from that same body of research ... men are most attracted to women who have their own lives. Their own passions. Their own fullness.

Not because men don't want to be important to you. But because neediness creates a specific neurobiological response

It feels like a trap.

When a woman is dependent on a man for her emotional regulation , when her happiness, her sense of self, her stability all come from him.. his nervous system registers that as a burden. Not because he's selfish. Because his brain is doing threat-detection math.

"If her wellbeing depends entirely on me, then any mistake I make causes catastrophic damage." That's high stakes. High stakes = danger.

But when a woman is already full i.e she has her own life, her own joy, her own stability, then his presence in her life is additive, not essential. He doesn't have to be perfect. He just has to be himself. And that creates safety.

The paradox is: the less you need him, the more he wants to be there. Not because he's playing games. Because his nervous system can relax when there's no gun to his head.

I’ve seen this over and over. The women who keep men around are the ones who would be fine without them. The women who lose men are the ones who fall apart at the thought of being alone.
