Boundaries Make Men Feel Safe

Boundaries Make Men Feel Safe

Instead of fighting a man for not having boundaries, work on yourself and have boundaries.

Let your boundaries influence his own and make sure your boundaries are true and resolute

We think boundaries push men away. "If I set limits, he'll feel rejected and leave." But the research says the opposite.

When a woman has clear boundaries, when she knows what she will and won't accept, something shifts in a man's nervous system. He relaxes. He feels safe. Because boundaries create predictability, and predictability is what a threat-detection system needs to stand down.

Men are socialized to be hypervigilant about social threat. We're scanning for signs that we're failing, that we're inadequate, that we're about to be rejected.

When a woman has no boundaries... when she says yes to everything, when she tolerates disrespect, when she has no bottom line...the man's nervous system doesn't read that as "she's easygoing." It reads it as "she's unpredictable, and unpredictability is danger."

A woman with boundaries says: "This is the line. Cross it and there are consequences." That creates a predictable environment. He knows where he stands. He knows the rules. And when the rules are clear, he can relax into the relationship instead of constantly scanning for hidden traps.

The men who are most deeply in love are with women who challenge them. Not in a nagging way. In a "I expect better from you" way. The men who are most checked out are with women who accept everything, forgive everything, have no standards.

Because if you don't value yourself enough to have boundaries, why should he value you? Not because he's cruel. Because your lack of boundaries signals that your self-worth is negotiable. And if your self-worth is negotiable, his investment in you is too.

My advice to all the women out there would be don't be a doormat.

Your boundaries are a signal to his threat-detection system that you're a stable environment worth investing in. Without them, his nervous system treats the relationship like quicksand.
